Ann-Mari Svennerholm
 | Bio: | Dr Ann-Mari Svennerholm is professor in Infections and Immunity at University of Gothenburg , Sweden since1988. She has been head of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and vicerector of Gothenburg university during several years. She has devoted most of her research to development of vaccines against enteric infections, i.e. cholera, diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) and Helicobacter pylori. She has together with professor Jan Holmgren, developed the oral cholera vaccine, Dukoral®. She has also, in collaboration with industry developed several ETEC candidate vaccines that have been extensively tested in Phase I-III trials in several countries with promising results in travelers. She has also studied pathogenic and immune mechanisms in H. pylori infections as a basis for vaccine development and identification of prognostic markers for gastric cancer. Dr Svennerholm has also devoted much of her research to studies of mucosal immune responses in animals and humans and has together with her group developed several state of the art methods to assess such responses. She has also established numerous genotypic and phenotypic methods for identification of gastrointestinal pathogens and her laboratory has been WHO reference laboratory for research on ETEC. Her recent work is focused on global health infections in collaboration with internationally leading institutions in the field, both in developed and developing countries.
Dr Svennerholm has been the supervisor for more than 50 PhD students and postdocs and is presently supervising several PhD students and postdocs from developed and developing countries. She has served on numerous national and international boards in the field of infections, vaccines and global health, e.g. the Swedish Research Council, the Foundation for Technology transfer between University and Industry , the Swedish Institute of Infectious Disease control in Sweden. She has been the chair for the WHO Diarrheal and Enteric Vaccines Advisory Committee, DEVAC, and the Norwegian Research Council program for global health and vaccines, GLOBVAC during several years. She has also been a member of the board of the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) in Korea and is presently on the board of the international center for diarrheal disease (icddrb) in Bangladesh. She has received several awards and is a member of the Swedish Royal Academy of science. She has published more than 400 original papers and review articles in the field of enteric infections and vaccines.
